Curator of Education Nancy Huth discusses the garments worn by the figures in some of the Museum’s paintings from the 17th through the 19th centuries. From the elegant black clothing worn by Rembrandt’s and Hals’s sitters to gossamer gowns of the late 1700s, dress evokes the sitters’ status and information about the society they inhabited. Huth holds a master’s degree in art history from Oberlin College and taught the history of costume at Ball State University.
