Lecture: The Probasco-Rowe Family, Their Homes and Their Architects

The second in a series of lectures by architectural historian Walter E. Langsam will  held  in conjunction with the Betts House exhibit Great Cincinnati Families at Home.

 

The contributions and achievements of the talented architects and artists commissioned by these families to design and decorate their homes will also be discussed. Among the well known local and national architects and craftspeople are James K. Wilson, William Tinsley, James W. McLaughlin, Samuel Hannaford, Bruce Price, J.J. Rueckert, James Gilmore, Gwathmey/Siegel, the Fry and Pitman art-carvers, and the artists of Rookwood Pottery.

 

The lecture will be accompanied by a slide presentation featuring historic and contemporary views of the exteriors and interiors of the homes.

 

The series continues on September 20, the Hauck family; and concludes on October 11, with the Huenefeld family.

 

Great Cincinnati Families at Home is on view at the Betts House until October 31, 2008. The exhibit is co-curated by Walter E. Langsam, an architectural historian who teaches at the University of Cincinnati and is the author of Great Houses of the Queen City (1997); and historic-preservation consultant Beth Sullebarger of Sullebarger Associates, a contributing author of Architecture in Cincinnati(2006). The exhibit is made possible by grants from the John Hauck Foundation, the William S. Rowe Foundation, the Jeanne Anderson Trust, and contributions from anonymous donors.
