I'm sad to say I will never again go to Hyde Park Tavern (HPT). My boyfriend and I started going to HPT days after it re-opened under new management. We loved the atmosphere, the owners could not be nicer, and the food was wonderful! We quickly became "regulars" and went there at least twice a week since November. My boyfriend and I were well known by the owners and the bar staff, all of whom we got along with great. Last Friday, January 25, two girlfriends and I went up to HPT for appetizers and drinks. The place was packed, and there was a wait to sit upstairs. The bar area (where we wanted to sit) didn't have an open seat, but is first come, first serve, so we were going to wait for something to open. We went upstairs to sit down and ordered a drink. I told my friends I was going to run downstairs to go to the bathroom and check the bar for any open seats or tables. When I got down there, I saw a nice couple starting to put on their coats at a table by the bar. I approached them, asked if I could take their table since they were leaving, they said sure no problem and I sat down when they got up. About 20 seconds after I sat down, I was approached by the General Manager (the man who is always wearing a blazer). He promptly told me that this seat was being "saved" for the 3 ladies at the hostess station. I told him I thought the bar is first come, first serve. He said "well, I told these girls they could sit here." He then pointed to the big table next to me and said "these people are leaving soon, you can sit there when the get up." I told him I'd like to sit at the table I was already sitting at. He said to me "but that table is bigger. You'll have more room. The people are getting up soon so just take that table, I was saving this for these girls." I hesitantly got up, and stood at the bar, waiting for the other table to open. The three girls sat down at the table I was asked to get up from and ordered there drinks. I looked at the table the General Manager in the blazer told me I could sit at, the one that was supposedly leaving soon and they had just ordered another round of drinks. After waiting about 10 minute, and figuring out that these people weren't leaving anytime soon, I went upstairs to get my friends. Feeling very degraded and upset, I went to the bar to pay my tab. When the bartender asked me why I was leaving so soon, I told her I thought the bar was first come, first serve. She said it was and I explained to her how I was asked to get up from a table I was sitting at by the General Manager so 3 girls could sit there instead. She apologized over and over again and I told her it wasn't her fault, but that I would not be in again. I refuse to spend money at an establishment that treats their customers like that, especially one's that had been in on a regular basis. I cannot bring myself to give my hard earned money to a place that treats people in such a way. I felt I was treated very unfairly by the General Manager and it has upset me to the point of never returning.
